Beneath the Surface: How Vela™ Is Helping Regrow the Blue Forest

Reviving the Underwater Forests of the Mediterranean

In the turquoise waters off the coast of Sardinia, a powerful restoration effort is taking root beneath the surface. The Blue Forest initiative, developed by the One Ocean Foundation in collaboration with the University of Sassari, is one of the most ambitious marine reforestation projects in the Mediterranean Sea. Its goal: to regenerate vast areas of Posidonia oceanica — a seagrass species vital for the health of marine ecosystems.

This plant may not draw much attention, but its impact is profound. Often called the lungs of the Mediterranean, Posidonia oceanica produces oxygen, stabilizes the seabed, and supports hundreds of marine species. It also acts as a highly efficient carbon sink, storing CO₂ at a rate comparable to some of the world’s most robust terrestrial forests. Yet, due to human activity, climate change, and pollution, these meadows are disappearing at an alarming rate.

In Cala di Volpe, a once-thriving stretch of seabed has been selected for restoration. Using carefully transplanted cuttings and scientific monitoring, Blue Forest is working to regenerate over 80 hectares of Posidonia by 2026—reviving not only the plant itself but the biodiversity and ecological resilience it supports. This is not only about conservation; it’s about rebalancing natural systems we’ve long taken for granted.
