Why Pact Chose Vela™ to Replace Plastic Packaging

Pact is a clothing brand built on a simple but ambitious idea: make better products through better practices. From organic cotton and Fair Trade Certified™ factories to transparent sourcing, the brand has become a reference point for responsible apparel.

As its e-commerce presence expanded, packaging surfaced as an important opportunity for improvement. While the clothing itself met high sustainability standards, the protective packaging still relied heavily on plastic polybags, a material that no longer aligned with Pact’s long-term vision for a cleaner, more responsible supply chain.

The Packaging Challenge

Like many apparel companies, Pact depended on single-use plastic polybags to keep garments protected from dust, moisture and handling during transit. Functionally, they worked. But strategically, they didn’t. The plastic contradicted the brand’s commitment to minimizing waste and complicated end-of-life disposal for customers and partners.

As highlighted in a Forbes interview with the company’s founder, “packaging has long been a weak spot for the apparel industry, and doing better requires rethinking the materials we rely on.” This statement captured the industry-wide challenge Pact wanted to address: replacing plastic with a solution that could perform at scale while delivering meaningful environmental improvement.

Criteria for Change: Why Pact Chose Vela™

Pact evaluated alternatives across multiple dimensions: durability, supply-chain compatibility, end-of-life recyclability, brand aesthetics and global logistics readiness. Vela™ bags stood out because they offered a paper-based system designed for performance in demanding apparel fulfilment contexts, while enabling curbside recycling and aligning with responsible sourcing (e.g., FSC™-certified options). The substitution of plastic with a paper alternative allowed Pact to maintain operational integrity and customer experience, while upgrading the packaging foundation of their brand promise.

Implementation: From Testing to Full Rollout

After selecting Vela™ as its preferred alternative to plastic polybags, Pact began introducing the new paper bags across its fulfilment operations. The transition required internal testing to confirm that the bags met the brand’s protection, handling, and operational needs. Once validated, Pact started integrating the new packaging across its logistics workflow, replacing traditional plastic bags with Vela™’s paper-based solution.

Impact & Results

By shifting to Vela™ paper bags, Pact removed conventional plastic polybags from its garment packaging system. This transition allows customers to dispose of packaging through curbside paper recycling streams, helping to simplify end-of-life processes and reduce overall waste.

Even without publicly disclosed metrics, the move represents a clear alignment between Pact’s product sourcing principles and its packaging materials, closing a gap that the brand has openly acknowledged within the industry. The adoption of a recyclable, paper-based solution strengthens consistency across the brand’s value chain and supports its long-term sustainability goals.

Looking Ahead

Pact’s transition to Vela™ bags represents a meaningful step toward more circular packaging practices. As the brand continues to refine and expand its sustainability initiatives, packaging remains an area where further innovation is possible, whether through material evolution, system optimisation, or broader supply-chain collaboration.

The Pact–Vela™ partnership underscores a shared belief: packaging should protect products without creating unnecessary waste.

Brands exploring more responsible packaging solutions can look to Vela™ as a pathway to reduce plastic and support more sustainable fulfilment systems.
